With roots in the Côte de Beaune dating back to 1875, the Gaunoux family has long been synonymous with Burgundian excellence. Jean-Michel Gaunoux established his own domaine in 1990, carrying forward the traditions of his grandfather Henri—one of the region’s most celebrated vignerons—and today works alongside his son Henri, the next generation of this storied lineage. Together, they farm just six hectares across Meursault, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, and Volnay, producing wines of rare precision and authenticity.

Among Volnay’s most revered Premier Cru vineyards, Clos des Chênes is famed for its elegance, depth, and longevity. Jean-Michel’s philosophy of lutte raisonnée—eschewing pesticides, practicing green harvesting, and maintaining naturally low yields—ensures fruit of exceptional concentration and purity.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is a striking example of classic Burgundy. Aromas of ripe red berries, smoke, and dried flowers lead into a palate of depth and finesse, framed by silky tannins and lifted by vibrant acidity. A long, chalk‑driven finish speaks to its limestone terroir.

This wine pairs beautifully with game, hearty meat dishes, or bavette with mushrooms, where its structure and earthy undertones shine. Equally, its elegance and mineral precision make it a refined partner for more delicate preparations.

The Domaine Jean Michel Gaunoux has made a name for itself as much by its high quality wines as by the difficulty of obtaining them. The palate is nicely concentrated, with velvety tannins. This vintage is a great success which will acquire more harmony with time.
