Bodegas Vega Sicilia

A Spanish Legend Redefined

In the pantheon of the world's most revered wine estates, Bodegas Vega Sicilia stands as Spain's undisputed icon. For over 150 years, its name has been synonymous with a singular vision of quality, patience, and profound elegance. While its history is long, the modern era of this legendary winery began in 1982 when it was acquired by the Álvarez family. Under the steadfast leadership of CEO Pablo Álvarez, Vega Sicilia has not only burnished its legacy but has expanded its philosophy of excellence into a global benchmark.

Today, the group encompasses a prestigious collection of estates, including Alión (Ribera del Duero), Pintia (Toro), Oremus (Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary), and Macán, a landmark joint venture with Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite in Rioja. Yet, despite this growth, the soul of the operation remains firmly planted in its original home. Of the group's total annual production of around 330,000 bottles, only a meticulously selected 100,000 to 120,000 earn the right to bear the coveted "Vega Sicilia" label.

2020 Bodegas Benjamin Rothschild and Vega Sicilia Macan Clasico

HK$378/bt - 10 cases (12) available

94 points Wine Advocate

The 2020 Macán Clásico was cropped from a more generous crop. The grapes were put in a cold chamber for one night and then underwent a cold soak of three to four days, after which they inoculated the yeasts—in 2020, 25% of it was their native yeast. It fermented in stainless steel, and the élevage was 45% in new French and 5% new American oak barrels, 28% in second use barrel and 22% in stainless steel for one year. The bottled wine has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.78 and 4.5 grams of acidity (tartaric). This is one of the most elegant vintages of this bottling so far. It has showy aromatics with notes of smoky bacon, a bit meaty, and the thing that surprised me the most was the velvety texture.

93 points James Suckling

Black olives and a hint of black bean puree to the fresh black cherries, damsons and a hint of mint. Refined, medium-bodied palate with fine, fresh tannins that are present but not grainy. Really elegant and long. Drinkable now, but will develop well in the next six to seven years.

90 points Wine Spector

Fine-grained, creamy tannins are well-meshed with juicy black cherry and mulberry fruit, rooibos tea leaf, red licorice, cocoa powder and fresh earth flavors in this supple, silky red. Drink now through 2030.

2019 Vega Sicilia Tinto Valbuena 5 OWC3

HK$ 1190 per bottle - 20 cases

95 points Wine Advocate

The obsession in 2019 was to avoid excess ripeness and to keep the freshness, so they did a softer vinification, used larger vats for the élevage and used less American wood. The 2019 Valbuena was produced with a blend of Tinto Fino with 3% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.6 grams of acidity. I love the nose; it is perfumed and subtle. And the wine is beautifully textured; the tannins are very fine, silky even, quite different from the tannins from the other 2019s from the group that I tasted next to this, Macán and Pintia. A triumph over the conditions of the year, it's a more elegant Valbuena than I anticipated. 190,490 bottles, 5,581 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2022.

2019 Vega Sicilia "Unico" Ribera del Duero OWC6

HK$ 2690 per bottle - 10 cases

98 points James Suckling

A refined, ethereal and elegant Unico. Streamlined layers of mixed peppercorns, smoked paprika, blackberries and spiced dark fruit. Hints of orange zest and flowers. Spicy, with tightly wound tannins. The length is impressive.

98 points Wine Advocate

The 2014 Único was produced with grapes from 40 hectares of vines selected from the 210 hectares the winery has. The grapes were picked between September 20th and October 3rd, and the blend was 94% Tinto Fino and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, with malolactic in stainless steel. The first part of the aging was in 225-liter barrels and the second one in 20,000-liter oak vats, and the élevage lasts 10 years between oak and bottle. It's a year that combines power and elegance; it's concentrated but has subtleness. I had a unique opportunity to taste it from magnum one year ago and was truly impressed. This tasting was consistent with those sensations. 2014 was a good vintage in the zone, a year with good rain and a big crop, not as powerful as 2012 or 2015 but a year with finesse. The wine feels very balanced, lower in alcohol and with integrated oak, crunchy, fresh and still young. It feels quite classical; it's fine-boned, elegant but also powerful, more like the Únicos from yesteryear. It has to be one of the finest vintages of recent times.

More on Bodegas Vega Sicilia

A Spanish Legend Redefined

The soul of Vega Sicilia lies in its 210 hectares of vineyards in Ribera del Duero. Here, at high altitudes of 700–900 meters, the vines endure an extreme continental climate with dramatic temperature shifts. This demanding terroir, combined with a complex mosaic of limestone, gravel, and clay soils, forges grapes of exceptional concentration and balance.

The estate’s signature is Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), which makes up 93% of the plantings and provides the backbone for its iconic wines. Small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec are blended in for added complexity. With meticulous organic farming and extremely low yields, winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan crafts wines of profound depth and longevity.

While the family has expanded its portfolio with other prestigious wineries, the Vega Sicilia label remains paramount. Its exclusivity is legendary: of the group's total output, only around 100,000 bottles annually earn the right to bear the flagship name, cementing its status as one of the world's most sought-after wines.
