Bodegas Vega Sicilia

A Spanish Legend Redefined

In the pantheon of the world's most revered wine estates, Bodegas Vega Sicilia stands as Spain's undisputed icon. For over 150 years, its name has been synonymous with a singular vision of quality, patience, and profound elegance. While its history is long, the modern era of this legendary winery began in 1982 when it was acquired by the Álvarez family. Under the steadfast leadership of CEO Pablo Álvarez, Vega Sicilia has not only burnished its legacy but has expanded its philosophy of excellence into a global benchmark.

Today, the group encompasses a prestigious collection of estates, including Alión (Ribera del Duero), Pintia (Toro), Oremus (Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary), and Macán, a landmark joint venture with Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite in Rioja. Yet, despite this growth, the soul of the operation remains firmly planted in its original home. Of the group's total annual production of around 330,000 bottles, only a meticulously selected 100,000 to 120,000 earn the right to bear the coveted "Vega Sicilia" label.

2020 Vega Siclia Pintia, Toro OWC12

HK$510/bt - 10 cases (12) available

93 points Wine Spectator

A graceful red, with lovely purity to the core of mulberry and roasted black plum fruit. Shows flattering notes of rooibos tea, fennel seed, vanilla, espresso and mineral. Defined by sculpted tannins, this is enmeshed in a silky texture, while lightly mouthwatering acidity carries the detailed profile on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2040.

2021 Vega Sicilia Alion Riberal Del Duero OWC12

HK$ 680 per bottle - 10 cases

98 points James Suckling

The vintage released in 2025 is the 2021 Alión, a year to remember, one of the best in recent times.  The wine has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.81 and 4.8 grams of acidity (tartaric). It's very fresh and fruit-driven, with the balance and elegance of the cooler year, and it's a little austere, with very elegant and polished tannins and a different quality, when the grapes ripen slowly. They believe 2024 has the potential to be like 2021, after the 2022 and 2023 vintages were a lot more challenging.

95 points James Suckling

A pretty deep but fresh and harmonious wine that can be consumed early. It’s from a blend of Ribera del Duero vineyards. Fascinating aromas of fine spices, dark chocolate, dark cherries, blackberries and cedar wood. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins and a lasting finish. Impeccable balance. A textbook Ribera del Duero that gives a panoramic view of the region.

2020 Vega Sicilia Tinto Valbuena 5 OWC6

HK$ 1250 per bottle - 10 cases

95 points Wine Advocate

The obsession in 2019 was to avoid excess ripeness and to keep the freshness, so they did a softer vinification, used larger vats for the élevage and used less American wood. The 2019 Valbuena was produced with a blend of Tinto Fino with 3% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.6 grams of acidity. I love the nose; it is perfumed and subtle. And the wine is beautifully textured; the tannins are very fine, silky even, quite different from the tannins from the other 2019s from the group that I tasted next to this, Macán and Pintia. A triumph over the conditions of the year, it's a more elegant Valbuena than I anticipated. 190,490 bottles, 5,581 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2022.

More on Bodegas Vega Sicilia

A Spanish Legend Redefined

The soul of Vega Sicilia lies in its 210 hectares of vineyards in Ribera del Duero. Here, at high altitudes of 700–900 meters, the vines endure an extreme continental climate with dramatic temperature shifts. This demanding terroir, combined with a complex mosaic of limestone, gravel, and clay soils, forges grapes of exceptional concentration and balance.

The estate’s signature is Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), which makes up 93% of the plantings and provides the backbone for its iconic wines. Small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec are blended in for added complexity. With meticulous organic farming and extremely low yields, winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan crafts wines of profound depth and longevity.

While the family has expanded its portfolio with other prestigious wineries, the Vega Sicilia label remains paramount. Its exclusivity is legendary: of the group's total output, only around 100,000 bottles annually earn the right to bear the flagship name, cementing its status as one of the world's most sought-after wines.
