Vega Sicilia Prestige, Exceptionally Priced!

2019 Bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º, Ribera del Duero D.O. OWC 6
HK$1090/bt – 12 cases (6) available

 97 points James Suckling
Extremely perfumed with violets and a bouquet of flowers. Then there’s blue fruits such as blueberries and raspberries. Medium-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that give a superb mouthfeel and finesse. Refinement with depth and focus. So wonderful to drink now but it will be even better in four or five years.

95 points Wine Advocate
The obsession in 2019 was to avoid excess ripeness and to keep the freshness, so they did a softer vinification, used larger vats for the élevage and used less American wood. The 2019 Valbuena was produced with a blend of Tinto Fino with 3% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.6 grams of acidity. I love the nose; it is perfumed and subtle. And the wine is beautifully textured; the tannins are very fine, silky even, quite different from the tannins from the other 2019s from the group that I tasted next to this, Macán and Pintia. A triumph over the conditions of the year, it's a more elegant Valbuena than I anticipated. 190,490 bottles, 5,581 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2022.

Crafted by Bodegas Vega Sicilia—widely regarded as Spain’s greatest winery—the 2019 Valbuena 5º from Ribera del Duero marries the vintage’s generous, dark-fruited richness with the trademark energy and precision that define modern Vega Sicilia.

Coming from the historic estate on the banks of the Duero River, Valbuena 5º is the gateway to Vega Sicilia’s grand-cru ethos: collectible yet comparatively accessible. It outranks Alión and Pintia in prestige, sits just beneath Único in complexity and longevity, and offers
both immediate pleasure and 15-plus years of graceful evolution—hence its status as one of the world’s benchmark “second” wines.

The 2019 Valbuena is drawn from roughly 140 ha of estate vines planted at 700–900 m on alluvial limestone, clay and fine gravel. The blend is 96 % Tinto Fino (Vega’s own Tempranillo clone) and 4 % Merlot, from 35–40-year-old vines. Tiny yields to ensure depth and concentration, while sustainable, organically minded farming and hand harvesting preserve purity. The 2019 growing season brought a temperate winter, cool wet spring, uniformly warm summer and a sunny, dry September—conditions that delivered perfectly ripe, balanced fruit. Vega Sicilia ranks 2019 among its finest modern vintages, on a par with 2015 and 2016.

In the cellar, Valbuena fermented with native yeasts in stainless-steel vats (15-day maceration at ~28 °C), completed malolactic in tank, and then spent 30 months in oak: ~12 months in 225 L French barriques (around 70 % new, plus some American oak) followed by 18 months in 20,000 L French tinas to knit the blend. Bottled in June 2022, the wine was released in spring 2024, five years after harvest.

The 2019 Valbuena shows deep garnet colour with purple flashes. Aromas of black cherry and redcurrant mingle with violets, cedar, liquorice and exotic spice. The palate is vibrant and polished: ripe dark fruit, silky tannins and juicy acidity flow to a long, mineral-tinged finish with hints of plum, espresso and graphite. Think more precision than 2018, less opulence than 2015, the poise of 2016. Enjoy now after a couple hours decant, or cellar confidently for another decade or more. Ideal partners include roast suckling lamb, Iberian pork loin, venison saddle, roast pigeon, truffle risotto, mushroom ragout and firm aged cheeses such as 18-month Manchego or Comté

We also have the following wines from Vega Sicilia on offer! Why don’t get a mixed case!

2020 Alion, Riberal del Duero
HK$560/bt – 10 cases (6) available
94 points James Suckling
There’s a finesse and polish to this red with blackberries, black olives, iron and terra-cotta. Medium to full body, with slightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. It will soften nicely with time. Try after 2025.

2019 Pintia, Toro OWC6
HK$430/bt – 12 cases (6) available
94 points James Suckling
Ripe blackberries, tar, dark cherries and dark spices. Fine cocoa powder, too. Rich and full-bodied on the palate with a saline smack to the middle. Very long and powerful but expressive and refined. A little richer and more powerful than 2018, but elegant and poised at the same time. Vertical, fine-grained tannins.

2020 Macan Clasico Rioja OC6
HK$350/bt – 12 cases (6) available
93 points James Suckling
Black olives and a hint of black bean puree to the fresh black cherries, damsons and a hint of mint. Refined, medium-bodied palate with fine, fresh tannins that are present but not grainy. Really elegant and long. Drinkable now, but will develop well in the next six to seven years.
