2020 Tenuta San Guido 'Guidalberto' Toscana IGT, Italy

2020 Tenuta San Guido 'Guidalberto' Toscana IGT, Italy OC6

HK$238/bt  - 5 cases (6) available

95 points Decanter
Guidalberto 2020 is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 15 months in oak (20% new), including a small percentage of American oak. The aromas are a little heavier, with ripe dark fruit and a fragrant, floral note. It's a little less finely detailed aromatically than the 2021, with some smoke, spice and green herb qualities. The palate is round, medium-full bodied with juicy, bright acidity. It's a very friendly wine with very fine tannins and there's a little more grip and silty texture to the tannins.

92 points Wine Advocate

The 2020 Guidalberto is taut and tight with plenty of tart cherry and wild berry. The wine offers great freshness and tension with bay leaf, spice, wild cherry and pressed lavender buds. There is a hint of black olive too. The blend is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Vintage 2020

The 2020 Tenuta San Guido 'Guidalberto' features a higher percentage of Merlot grapes then previous vintages. It is aged using a combination of new wood, second passage wood, and equal shares of third and fourth passage barrels.

It is full-bodied wine of intense red fruit flavor and and elegantly supple texture supported by ripe, silky tannins. The Merlot in the blend is expressed in sweet black fruit with overall aromas of ripe, concentrated berries offset by restrained spicy oak notes.

About Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto

Guidalberto, was first introduced in 2000, is a remarkable wine brought to the world by the renowned Tenuta San Guido from the Bolgheri region, which is also responsible for the infamous Super Tuscan Sassicaia.

This wine pays homage to Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneering figure in the Bolgheri area during the early 1800s. Guidalberto built factories, churches, and even planned the iconic avenue of cypress trees known as the Viale dei Cipressi. Initially used to mark boundaries between different crops, these cypresses later became an ornamental feature. Guidalberto is designed to be approachable and drinkable from an earlier age, while sharing similar concepts with its famous sibling, Sassicaia: creating high-quality Tuscany wine with Cabernet blends.

Guidalberto is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It offers a distinct expression of the Tenuta San Guido terroir compared to Sassicaia. On the palate, the wine balances fragrance and sweetness, with Merlot contributing to its approachability. According to Carlo Paoli, the General Manager of Tenuta San Guido, Guidalberto possesses its own personality while sharing flavor and elegance with Sassicaia.

The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido for Guidalberto are situated at an altitude of 100 to 300 meters above sea level, with south and southwest exposure. This allows the vines to enjoy a well-balanced and consistent temperature throughout the vintage. The soil is composites with limestone, marl, and clay components, contribute to the wine’s mineral richness and water retention.

Offered subject to confirmation and remaining unsold.
