Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, a charming subregion of Burgundy, lies to the west of the famed Côte de Nuits. Unlike the Côte de Nuits, which features vineyards along the Côte d’Or escarpment, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is situated at higher altitudes across elevated plateaus and valleys.

Vineyards here thrive between 290 and 450 meters, benefiting from a cooler climate. This area is recognized as Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits AOC, established in 1961, and includes 16 communes producing red, white, and rosé wines over approximately 765 hectares.

The region’s winemaking history began in the 3rd century with Roman viticulture, but it was the Benedictine and Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages who truly shaped its legacy.
 

One fun fact is that in the earliest book dedicated to Burgundy wines, written in 1723 by Abbé Claude Arnoux, the red wines from Hautes-Côtes de Nuits were praised as being "full of fire, uplifting and light, almost all genius". This description highlights the long-standing appreciation for the unique qualities of wines from this region.”

The 2022 Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Rouge comes from the same parcel as the white, though this is slightly less than a hectare. With cranberry and wild strawberry fruit on the feisty nose, it gradually calms down and attains commendable delineation. The medium-bodied palate has a slight piquancy on the entry, a crisp line of acidity and pastille-like red fruit on the finish.

The 2019 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Cuvée Maelie Rouge, matured in 10% new oak, has a light nose of brambly red fruit, more raspberry than strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp tannins on the entry, and quite angular at the moment, but very fresh, with a pleasant peppery finish. Fine.
